MACC Advises to Investigate Manyin Over His Warning To The Community Leaders During the Presentation of Their Appointment Letters

Kuching
Tuesday, 29th June 2010

These dayak leaders who had been bought over by Taib Mahmud is willing to do anything to satisfy their boss even to the extend of making fools of their own people....

I was stunned when I read  a report by BERNAMA about  Manyin warning to all the appointed community leaders in Samarahan Division yesterday.
In his speech, Manyin warned all the appointed tribal leaders to throw  their full support to the Barisan Nasional or risk their services being terminated. I am urging the MACC to investigate Manyin immediately for abuse of power.
And  as for the PKR, I am urging the party to lodge the report with MACC if the commission fail to  react accordingly.

Please see the full report from BERNAMA below:-

Any tribal leader who supports the opposition in the next Sarawak state election will face immediate termination of service as the action is a very serious misconduct, said Sarawak Infrastructure Development and Communication Minister Michael Manyin.

"Tribal leaders are the government's agents in developing local communities and are not supposed to go against the government," he said at a ceremony to present appointment letters to Bidayuh and Melayu Temenggong (paramount leader) of Samarahan, here today.

In Sarawak, the post of Temenggong is the highest ranked community leader in the local administration system, followed by pemanca, penghulu and tribal leader.

Manyin said as the state election would be held soon, tribal leaders should enhance their efforts to assist the government by disseminating information about the success of the state government in bringing development to the people in the remote areas.

"To improve the government's delivery system, the state government wants tribal leaders to be open-minded in accepting criticism and suggestions," he said.

Manyin said the post of tribal leader was not a permanent post as it had been limited to four years.

"No voting or election is needed in appointing a new tribal leader as he will be appointed according to the approval given by the district officer, division resident and state secretary," he said.

Former teacher, Robert Sulis Ridu, 75, was appointed as the Bidayuh Temenggong of Samarahan representing the Bidayuhs, while former religious teacher, Chek Bujang, 59, was appointed as Melayu Temenggong of Samarahan to represent the Malays.

Bidayuh Temenggong will lead 152 Bidayuh community and tribal leaders while Melayu Temenggong will lead 111 Malay community and tribal leaders in Samarahan.

Barisan Nasional Political Plot Against The Iban

Kuching
Monday, 28th June 2010

The total population of Sarawak is 2.7 million and out of this total population 1.2 million or 44 % are Iban, where as the rest are Chinese, Malay, and others (Bidayuh, Melanau, Kayan etc). Despite being the majority but Iban still cannot rule Sarawak. The last time it ruled Sarawak was during Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan.
The question is, why despite the majority, Iban still cannot become the Chief Minister of Sarawak? Are we that stupid and easily manipulated by Taib Mahmud and Barisan nasiobal (BN) ?
The answer is no. Iban which own the most NCR lands in Sarawak cannot be stupid. But there are few reasons why we still bow  to Taib Mahmud. These reasons are like, first Taib politic of divide and rule. Being the majority alone without the support of the other dayaks like Bidayuh and Kayan Iban will not be strong enough to helm to power. To divide the dayak, Taib first move was to amend the constituition by abolished the word dayak, and changed it to Iban, Kayan, Bidayuh and so on.

Divide and Rule.......Give more Development to Bidayuh compared to Iban and kayan!

Bidayuh Given the New Secondary School.....

No School for Iban majority areas..just include Iban subject in UPSI

Next Taib marginalised the majority group among the dayak by providing less development to them. That is the reason why the Bidayuh has been given more development compared to the Iban and kayan.

Another plot by Barisan Nasional/Taib to fish for dayak vote is by employing "brain wash". This is done by confusing the dayak with the definition of "perintah" (government). The BN YBs during their campaigns always remind the dayaks to vote for government (Perintah), in order for the development to reach them or for the continous development of their longhouses. Other than that, the longhouse heads also reminded to ensure that his anembiaks (people) did not vote for the opposition or risk losing theirs RM 450 monthly allowance as a longhouse chief.

Spread Propaganda in Iban Maority Areas!

Winning the election in Sarawak will not going to be an easy task for Pakatan Rakyat. To win the election, PR must first win the Iban majority areas.PR can win the Iban majority areas if the above strategies of the BN is overcame.

The New MOE Regulations on Ration Tender For School in sarawak Will Have Adverse Effects to the Iban Contractors

Kapit, Sarawak
Thursday, 24th June 2010

Acting  on a report published in Borneo Post yesterday, Wednesday, 23rd June 2010 about a new requirements for a supply of school ration for Jan 2011 to Dec 2012, Remaung6Renjer conducted a check with MOE website. It was found that the clause Makanan Bermasak Islam (Muslim cooked Food) was included in the tender document. With that the grievance of  the three Iban contractors, namely Kilau, Gira and Empati yesterday was true.

MOE Tender Advertisement which indicated about the Masakan Makanan Islam as the requirement to enter the tender....Just imagined what will happen to the Iban entrepreneurs? NGILING TIKAI!

The government particularly the Ministry of Education must look into this matter thoroughly. The sensitivity of the other races especially the non-muslim must be also considered. We understood that the requirements were set by the MOE officers who are mostly from the peninsular Malaysia and whose understanding and knowledge about Sarawak are very minimum but the mistake can be avoided if the MOE officer from Sarawak is  consulted before  included the requirements.
With this new tender requirements most if not all of the Iban contractors will lose their businesses.
The new ruling is not applicable in Kapit (schools without muslim students) and in particular unfriendly to Iban or other indigenous Bumiputera Contractors who are non-muslims. Moreever, this is not in the policy of 1Malaysia as advocated by Prime Datuk Seri najib Tun Razak. This is contrary to the government policy  of fair distribution of business opportunities to all. According to the new ruling, we, the bumiputera Iban's entrepreneurs, are barred from the department's tender. said the three of them in highlighted their grievances.
As of today, none of the dayak leaders be it from Barisan Nasional (BN)  or the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR), came forward to handle their grievances. Even Jabu and Masing the most "bad mouth" Iban leader , also remained quiet about the issue.

We hope that the grievances of the non-muslims bumiputera entrepreneurs  relating to the food tender is well looking at by the MOE.

Sarawak Police Force Get their Hands Dirty In Helping the Timber Company Against the Penan

Kuching
Wednesday, 23rd June 2010

The once proud, well-trained Sarawak police force are now mere lackeys of the timber companies, as events yesterday make only too obvious.

The Penan, who have been erecting peaceful jungle blockades in protest at the savage destruction of their hereditory lands, were yesterday confronted in Long Sebayang, Limbang by gun-waving policemen. They were acting on behalf of Lee Ling Timber, the other party to the dispute.

According to the respected Swiss Charity the Bruno Manser Foundation, the unprofessional, threatening and downright illegal episode came in the wake of an attack the previous day by a logging company employee on one of the Penan. The tribesman (and rightful owner of the land, according to Native Customary Rights recently upheld in the Federal Malay Court) had been viciously hit in the face.

However, instead of investigating that crime the police came to show their solidarity with the timber company. Such was their lack of impartiality and lack of professional pride that these officers even allowed themselves to be transported to the area by timber company lorries rather than their own vehicles. After shouting and threatening the Penan the police then stood by as the company officials threatened to come back again soon with ‘more gangsters’ – implying very accurately that these police had been the first gangsters!

The Penan have gained international respect because of their Ghandi-style passive resistance to the logging companies. But their problems reflect what has happened to hundreds of thousands of tribespeople across Sarawak, who have been turfed off their lands by greedy companies backed by Taib Mahmud and his cronies. Ask the Iban, Kayan and Kenya communities if they received any of the rich profits from timber or oil palm. Meanwhile, the Taibs’ foreign tower blocks are what Sarawak now has to show for what was once arguably the most magnificent tropical rainforest paradise in the world.

The Penan have been brutally treated by the invading timber companies. They are threatened by gangsters, their women have been systematically raped and their livelihoods removed. Yet the police have never investigated these appalling crimes, despite a huge volume of evidence from independent and official bodies.

It is possible that the men who turned up claiming to be police at Long Sebayang were in fact just gangsters themselves. If so where are the real police who should be sorting out such behaviour by timber companies?

These gangsters and the authorities too need to be mindful, because the world is moving on. Episodes like yesterday’s would once have remained hidden in dark and distant jungles, but these days such incidents, are reported within hours. Already news of this event is crossing the world and protests are being raised on an international level. How long can the reputation of Malaysia withstand such shocking behaviour in Sarawak?

Snowdan Lawan Remind Not to Be Misled the Iban in N25 Balai Ringin

Kampong Empaling, Sri Aman
Wednesday, 23rd June 2010

Congratulations YB but for What constributions?

The task of the Yang Berhormat (YB) other than to bring the development into his constituency, he too also needs to protect the interest of the people in the constituency from any inteference.
YB Snowdan Lawan has been the YB for N25-Balai Ringin for the first term or for the past four (4) years but without significant contributions to the contituency. Eventhough  without the constributions to his  contituency, on 5th June 2010 he was awarded with the Ahli Mangku Negara (AMN) title by the Yang DiPertuan Agong.
But probably the award was for his contribution to the Dayak Music Industry. Snowdan so far has seen more successful doing his job as an Anugerah Musik Dayak (AMD) chairman than doing his task as a YB for N25-Balai Ringin. N25-Balai Ringin which he has been representing for about five (5)  years, is known as one of the most less developed constuencies in  Malaysia.
In 2004, the people of the four longhouses under his constituency namely Rh Bugak Ubah, Rh Jawan Tekuyong, Rh Ngulu Empaling and Rh Stephen Isu, signed an agreement with Tetangga Akrab Pantu to develop their NCR lands. The NCR lands which were mostly planted with the rubber tress were cleared and the timber from these NCR lands were sold by Tetangga Akrab without any compensation to the land owners.
Since the signing of the JV with Tetangga Akrab until it was sold to Kim Loong Resources Sdn. Bhd in late 2009,  the land owners were only paid with the Advance Divident amounting to less than RM 200.00 per hectare per year. The latest presentation of the Advance Divident to the land participants was held on 22nd May 2010 at the company office in Tekuyong.

Hey YB....Stop Mislead the People that had Put you on the YBs Chair.....

The Advance Divident payment was officiated by YB Snowdan Lawan,  where 460 participants recieved Advance Divident totalling RM 118,397, far below the amount of income that they could get if their NCR lands were not cleared for the JV. During the presentation of cheque ceremony, YB Snowdan Lawan advised the participants to bank in or invest their monies in the Amanah Saham Nasional. What a joke.....
Being the participants in the JV  myself , where I surrendered my 2 hectares of land which I enherited from my late father, I did not go to collect the divident as the petrol and subsitence cost to make that journey  will exceed the amount of advanve divedent that I will get. Based on previous experiences with two hectares of land that I have, I was only paid with RM 120 per six months or equivalent to RM 20 per months advance divident. What sort of JV is this? Obviously it was not enough for daily expenses what to say for investment or  for saving in the bank. That two hectares of land which were planted with rubber trees before the JV, with existing rubber price, easily I can make an income of RM 2000 per month.
For what had happened to our land and the indirect loss incurred to us as a result of the JV, I am blamming all of these YBs and the ex-YB below:-

(1) YB Snowdan Lawan
(2) YB Mong Dagang
(3) Ex-YB Jimmy Donald

The above YB should be held responssible for  misled us to sign the JV with Tetangga Akrab and Pelita.

To conclude, I hope Snowdan Lawan will do these two things to the voters in N25-Balai Ringin before the next State Election:-

(1) In the whole of Malaysia, N25-Balai Ringin is the most less developed constituency. BN must bring the development which is capable to uplift the living standard of the people in thev constituency such as the project like "one longhouse with one products". Do not mislead the people with roof zinc, 'anak ayam" and the MRP Grant. Cleaned water, electricity and tar sealed road is a must things for every longhouses, and should not be considered as a development.

(2) The top PRS/BN failure in N25- Balai Ringin, is an Oil Palm JV Project where the NCR lands planted with rubber trees were surrendered to PELITA and Tetangga Akrab/Kim Loong Resources. You must help the land owners to get back their lands from the company. The JV is a failure since it cannot pay the land owners atleast RM 800/month per hectares.

Fulfilling the above two items may not guarantee the PRS/BN to win the seat in the coming state election, but without doing it, you'll be remembered as the most unsuccessfull Iban's YB with Agong's award throughout Sarawak history.

Jabu and Taib Mahmud Fool the Iban and Malays

Kuching
Tuesday, 22nd June 2010

PBB Members have Been Fooled By Taib Mahmud and Jabu Numpang

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) is a back bone for the Barisan Nasional in Sarawak. If we look back at the history of PBB, it was formed from the combination of three parties in Sarawak, the Parti Negara Sarawak (PANAS)-Malays, the Barisan Rakyat Jati Sarawak (BARJASA)-Malay/Melanaus and the Parti Pesaka Anak Sarawak (PESAKA-Iban on April 30, 1973.Tun Jugah Barieng was the first president of the party until his death in 1981, when he was replaced by the current Chief Minister of Sarawak, Taib Mahmud.Hence we can say that the members of the party are divided into two groups, the Malay/Melanau-Muslim which is lead by Taib Mahmud and the Iban/dayak group which is lead by Alfred Jabu.

The two Stooges that Fooled the Malays and Ibans

Taib Mahmud hailed from Mukah whereas Alfred Jabu is from Betong. In the PBB these two veteran politicians are the most powerful men. They can do anything that they would like to do. One of these are the diversion of monies from another areas to their hometowns Betong and Mukah. I have written this here, how the monies from the federal government which were meant for other divisions had been diverted by Jabu Numpang and Taib Mahmud to Betong and Mukah respectively.

Let's first look at Betong. Betong is just a cowboy town located in the interior  of Sarawak. In the 80s, Betong was only known as a home for RENTAP, a popular Iban warrior that fought Rajah Brooke in the 19th century. But now compare to the rest of it neeighbouring towns like Seratok, Sarikei and Sri Aman, Betong is far more developed. The people of Betong must thanks Alfred Jabu for his efforts in diverting most of the developments for the other areas , for instance the Technical School, the Polytechnic College, Mara Junior College , and many more, to this small town.

As for Taib Mahmud, he is not only diverting  the monies but he robbed all the monies allocated for other divisions to the nothern part of Sarawak under it baby project the SCORE.
The Ibans and the Malays should by now realised that they had been fooled by these two leaders. The Malay in the coastal areas such as in Simunjan, Kabong, Lingga etc..is still far behind in term of development compared to the Melanau-Muslims in Mukah.Taib for the past 40 years have been using Islam to to gain the support of the Malay but neglected them in development.

For the Ibans, after almost 47 years under the rule of BN they remained the poorest group in Sarawak. If the census on the  household income had been done propely, I believe that more than 90 percents of the Iban in the longhouses are still lived under the poverty line. But beside this fact why the Iban still vote for BN, the questions which most of the political critics in Malaysia very difficult to answer.

The state election if not this year will be held by first quarter of next year. We hope that the  Malays and Ibans are now realised  that they had been fooled by Taib Mahmud and Alfred Jabu. This should be translated to the election by VOTING Taib and Alfred Jabu, and the PBB out!

Exclusive – Taibs’ Foreign Property Portfolio

Kuching
Monday, 21st June 2010

Canadian properties worth in excess of a hundred million dollars

Twin glass towers and a swish shopping complex at Preston Square in downtown Ottawa form just part of an enormous foreign property portfolio controlled in Canada by the family of Sarawak Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, according to our exclusive investigations.

These buildings alone are worth at least one hundred million dollars and generate a healthy rental income from some of Canada’s top corporations, including Xerox, Adobe and Sun Life, who rent office space and retail outlets. Numerous Canadian Government Ministries are also listed at the building.

Preston Square Ottawa – office space and shops The Preston Square development lies at the centre of the major Canadian property empire run by the developer Sakto, which was founded in the early 1980s by Taib’s college-aged son Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, his daughter Jamilah and his brother Onn Mahmud. It continues to be managed as a ‘family business’ by his now son-in-law, a Canadian, Sean Murray.

Commercial Skyscraper – Ottawa’s ‘Xerox Tower’ Complex. Sun Life and Adobe are some of the companies to rent space in this prestige property in Ottawa Taxpayers in Sarawak are entitled to ask how the Chief Minister’s modest 20,000 Malaysian Ringgit a month official salary has managed to help generate a property empire worth so much. It is also well known that the Taib family own further considerable assets in Malaysia and elsewhere.

Dozens more buildings in Canada alone

Adjacent to the Preston Square commercial complex, Sarawak Report has further identified a luxury, multi-story residential building, also constructed by the Taibs and let for rent since 2006. The family have named the building The Adelaide, an Australian city popular with Taib Mahmud and his late wife Laila.

Luxury Living - The Adelaide (left)

Sakto publicity boasts that these ”stylish urban rentals are lavishly equipped” with ”all the elements of contemporary flair” and assure clients that ”all units share the ease of abundant parking and the beauty of Preston’s Square manicured setting”.

Arrogant Admission

We bring these revelations in the wake of the elderly Chief Minister’s admission last week that the Bumi remain ”poor and in difficulty”. In this way, he explained, they can be relied upon to stay ”humble” and continue to vote for Barisan National (BN) at the next election. Many in Sarawak have questioned why the Chief Minister has done so little to improve the lives of his people during his thirty years in power and where the profits of decades of timber and oil extraction have been spent. Sarawak is Malaysia’s richest state in terms of natural resources and yet remains home to some of its poorest people.

Exclusive revelations show Canadian Government and top corporations rent from the Taibs

Sakto Development Corporation was set up in August 1983, according to official Ontario records, two years after Taib Mahmud took power. The Directors were Taib’s brother, Onn Mahmud, Taib’s son Mahmud Abu Bekir (aged just 20) and Taib’s daughter Jamilah, both still students. Three months later Onn also established Richfold Investment Limited in Hong Kong. He did so on the same day that another company, Regent Star Company Limited, was incorporated with a mutual director, Kin Kwok Shea, at the same office address. It was Regent Star Company which was identified by the Japanese Tax Authorities in 2007 as having received 32 million Malaysian Ringgit in kickbacks from Japanese timber exporters over the preceding seven years covered by their investigation. The Japanese shipping cartel is known to have been making such payments since the early 1980s, amounting to a total of hundreds of millions of ringgit.

Impressive Investments

Sakto publicity claimed the company invested heavily in its first year(1983), “acquiring over 400 residential units” according to its previous website.

One of the Taib residential properties
Financial records also show that the company invested over $7 million Canadian Dollars during the first twelve months of its activities, $4.5 million of which was raised from its shareholders. In Canada shareholders are allowed to remain anonymous. By the end of its first decade (in 1993) Sakto’s Financial Report shows the company had assets of just under $40 million Canadian Dollars. Those acquisitions were backed by over $25 million in interest-free shareholder loans, for which “repayment terms had not been established”. Additionally, Sakto had received a further $3 million in non-interest bearing loans, $1.5 million of which was “payable to a company related to a shareholder”. Among the developments Sakto invested in was the construction of what the company described as a “Class A Office Tower”, completed on schedule and within budget in November 1989. Known as 333 Preston Street, this building houses the company’s current headquarters.

Sakto Financial Report 1993

Aquired in 2000 - Government Offices

During the 1990s, the company claims it ”continued shaping [its] property portfolio through acquisitions and disposals of various assets” and since 2000 it has been involved in some of Ottawa’s biggest property deals. These included the news making purchase of over a quarter of a million square feet of commercial space in the flourishing high-tech business district of Kanata and other buildings for over $31 million Canadian Dollars. Much of this property was later sold on to a ’nominee’ company, however Sakto continues to lease and manage the buildings, apparently on behalf of the new purchasers.

Getting Bigger – Commercial Plaza Expansion The company has recently completed the building of a second phase of its Preston Street Commerce Plaza complex, which includes a second 16 story tower block and a large commercial centre. The Sakto website boasts that the centre represents “the very definition of Class A business space”.

Uncle Onn Mahmud (Taib's brother) Directed the company with Jamilah until 2004

Sean Murray, the current Director of Sakto, is a Canadian of Irish Catholic extraction. Records show he became involved in Sakto’s affairs in 1987, having reportedly met Jamilah Taib at University. After marrying Jamilah, a process that involved his conversion to Islam, Sean Murray took over as a Director of a number of the Taib property interests, however there is no indication that he has become an actual shareholder. Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib ceased to be listed as a Director of Sakto some years ago, however Onn Mahmud, Taib’s brother only resigned as a Director in 2004.

Aged 23 Jamilah Taib became Director of Sakto Development Corporation (between studies) then President

Society Family

A number of Sean Murray’s family members are now employed at Sakto, which they describe as a family business. Some of Canada’s biggest commercial names rent space at their commercial and office properties, as well as numerous Canadian Government Ministries.

Major Shopping Mall – includes Chapters Bookstore

Now prominent members of Ottawa’s social elite, Sean Murray and Jamilah Taib are frequently photographed at society occasions and listed as donors to the city’s National Gallery of Canada. Functions at their lavish Rockcliffe mansion have included fundraisers for the top Canadian school, Ashbury College and for multiple Irish charities, including the Catholic St Patrick’s Home and the Ireland Fund of Canada.

The couple drew considerable attention when they recently moved into their new house, recorded as being the second most expensive private home in Ottawa and costing them over $9.6 million Canadian Dollars. Guests have been known to joke that it is so vast that different wings must have different post codes.

Sean and Jamilah - Ottawa's Golden Couple Political Connections

The couple, separately and through Sakto, have also been regular donors to the Ontario Liberal Party. This has included contributions totalling $6,000 to Premiere Dalton Mcguinty’s campaign budget in 2003. In 2007 it was announced that eleven Ontario Ministries were relocating into Sakto’s Preston Square building. ”Bringing together 11 ministries at Preston Square, in the heart of our community, will make our government more accessible to the people of Ottawa and more cost-effective”, explained Yasir Naqvi, MPP for Ottawa Centre. The offices were officially opened by Dalton Mcguinty himself in April 2008.

Pink Palace – Jamilah’s ‘tacky’ Ottawa Mansion From trees to tower blocks

Sarawak Report’s exclusive revelations are likely to draw fierce criticism from Canadian environmentalists and human rights campaigners, who have highlighted the devastation caused by unsustainable logging in Sarawak. Over US$25 billion worth of timber has been exported from the state as a result of the rampant, unsustainable logging promoted by Taib Mahmud and the former Chief Minister, who was his uncle. Less than 3% of the original rainforest remains and many of its indigenous peoples are now destitute as a direct result.

High-Tech - another Sakto acquisition

What is now clear is that Sakto’s position as one of Canada’s top development companies is closely linked to the Taib family’s questionable wealth and to tropical rainforest devastation. Canada’s booming property market of past years has exponentially increased the value of those investments, leaving the Taibs (but not the people of Sarawak) even more fabulously wealthy than before.

Shady truths in ‘fancy’ Sarawak

Kuching
Sunday, 20th June 2010

Members of the Sarawak government are always accusing people who criticise their policies of being enemies of ‘progress, development and modernisation’.
But these policies have reportedly stripped the country of its rainforests and taken away Native Customary Rights (NCR) lands from natives and turnd them into endless stretches of oil palm plantations.

Who is really profiting?

Chief Minister Taib Mamud has for years promised the people of Sarawak that in return for their land and destruction of the rainforest they would receive a future bathed in wealth and prosperity. He promised them a modern standard of living comparable to advanced countries.

But what is the evidence of this?

Not only the outsiders know that Iban have been marginalised but all the Iban leaders like Datuk Leonard Linggi, Alfred Jabu, James Masing, Celestine Ujang, William Mawan also know but why until now they, the dayak leaders could not defend their own people? What had Taib given to them until they look so stupid ?..Bukittunggal

Are these leaders being bought by Taib Mahmud ?

Sarawak which is the richest state in Malaysia has the poorest population. More than 60% of the population are said to be statistically living in poverty.

Over the years the poor have gotten poorer and hungrier without their lands to live off from.

In contrast the people around Taib and his friends have become richer, living a life in splendour that would have amazed Rajah Brooke himself.

Everything has been taken from the once fabulous interior of Sarawak and given to the rich businessmen from the coastal cities.

Deal that left Ibans in debt

In Batang Ai, the Iban community is struggling as in other parts of Sarawak. They were promised good compensation when they were forced from their homes to make way for the building of the dam.

But, like so many communities in Sarawak, they soon discovered their mistake. It turned out the government wanted to charge more for their new homes than the compensation for their old ones!

Now the Ibans are in debt to the government and have lost their valuable lands.

They were told that they would receive free water and electricity from the dam, but this promise has since been broken.

Most families have to use rainwater to cook and wash and to flush their toilets. At night the Ibans in this longhouse share electricity with their neighbours.

The roads to their longhouses have caved-in and the palm plantations around them have clogged up the river and are threatening dangerous mud-slides into their town.

Farmers have to walk many miles to reach their allocated fields and can no longer catch fish. There is no longer food from the forest.

The only ‘modern’ jobs on offer are the very lowly paid jobs on the oil plantations run by SALCRA, which is managed by Taib’s family and friends.

Ibans are paid RM8 a day – compare this with the RM165 million that Taib’s family allegedly made from the Bengoh Dam project in just a few weeks!

Millions promised but nothing came

Little needs to be said about the roads to Batang Ai. The only time the roads were surfaced was the day before Taib flew from Kuching in his helicopter for last year’s Batang Ai by election.

The government agency hastily repaired the one stretch between the heliport and the place he was due to speak. On that occasion Taib again promised the people at Batang Ai that if they voted for him he would pay millions of ringgit to improve their longhouses and their roads.

But that did not happen. Most roads are as terrible as before and longhouses have received no money.

Said a resident of a longhouse in Batang Ai, who’s great grandfather was a proud Iban warrior: “Thirty years after Taib came and promised us ‘modernisation’ with the coming of the dam and the planting of oil palm, we are poorer and our lives are harder.

“I go to Kuching and I see Taib’s fancy house and his parliament. I see the fancy hotels and buildings. Then I return and see us, our lives. I can see who has really profited from all this ‘progress and development’.”
