Exclusive – Taibs’ Foreign Property Portfolio

Kuching
Monday, 21st June 2010

Canadian properties worth in excess of a hundred million dollars

Twin glass towers and a swish shopping complex at Preston Square in downtown Ottawa form just part of an enormous foreign property portfolio controlled in Canada by the family of Sarawak Chief Minister, Abdul Taib Mahmud, according to our exclusive investigations.

These buildings alone are worth at least one hundred million dollars and generate a healthy rental income from some of Canada’s top corporations, including Xerox, Adobe and Sun Life, who rent office space and retail outlets. Numerous Canadian Government Ministries are also listed at the building.

Preston Square Ottawa – office space and shops The Preston Square development lies at the centre of the major Canadian property empire run by the developer Sakto, which was founded in the early 1980s by Taib’s college-aged son Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib, his daughter Jamilah and his brother Onn Mahmud. It continues to be managed as a ‘family business’ by his now son-in-law, a Canadian, Sean Murray.

Commercial Skyscraper – Ottawa’s ‘Xerox Tower’ Complex. Sun Life and Adobe are some of the companies to rent space in this prestige property in Ottawa Taxpayers in Sarawak are entitled to ask how the Chief Minister’s modest 20,000 Malaysian Ringgit a month official salary has managed to help generate a property empire worth so much. It is also well known that the Taib family own further considerable assets in Malaysia and elsewhere.

Dozens more buildings in Canada alone

Adjacent to the Preston Square commercial complex, Sarawak Report has further identified a luxury, multi-story residential building, also constructed by the Taibs and let for rent since 2006. The family have named the building The Adelaide, an Australian city popular with Taib Mahmud and his late wife Laila.

Luxury Living - The Adelaide (left)

Sakto publicity boasts that these ”stylish urban rentals are lavishly equipped” with ”all the elements of contemporary flair” and assure clients that ”all units share the ease of abundant parking and the beauty of Preston’s Square manicured setting”.

Arrogant Admission

We bring these revelations in the wake of the elderly Chief Minister’s admission last week that the Bumi remain ”poor and in difficulty”. In this way, he explained, they can be relied upon to stay ”humble” and continue to vote for Barisan National (BN) at the next election. Many in Sarawak have questioned why the Chief Minister has done so little to improve the lives of his people during his thirty years in power and where the profits of decades of timber and oil extraction have been spent. Sarawak is Malaysia’s richest state in terms of natural resources and yet remains home to some of its poorest people.

Exclusive revelations show Canadian Government and top corporations rent from the Taibs

Sakto Development Corporation was set up in August 1983, according to official Ontario records, two years after Taib Mahmud took power. The Directors were Taib’s brother, Onn Mahmud, Taib’s son Mahmud Abu Bekir (aged just 20) and Taib’s daughter Jamilah, both still students. Three months later Onn also established Richfold Investment Limited in Hong Kong. He did so on the same day that another company, Regent Star Company Limited, was incorporated with a mutual director, Kin Kwok Shea, at the same office address. It was Regent Star Company which was identified by the Japanese Tax Authorities in 2007 as having received 32 million Malaysian Ringgit in kickbacks from Japanese timber exporters over the preceding seven years covered by their investigation. The Japanese shipping cartel is known to have been making such payments since the early 1980s, amounting to a total of hundreds of millions of ringgit.

Impressive Investments

Sakto publicity claimed the company invested heavily in its first year(1983), “acquiring over 400 residential units” according to its previous website.

One of the Taib residential properties
Financial records also show that the company invested over $7 million Canadian Dollars during the first twelve months of its activities, $4.5 million of which was raised from its shareholders. In Canada shareholders are allowed to remain anonymous. By the end of its first decade (in 1993) Sakto’s Financial Report shows the company had assets of just under $40 million Canadian Dollars. Those acquisitions were backed by over $25 million in interest-free shareholder loans, for which “repayment terms had not been established”. Additionally, Sakto had received a further $3 million in non-interest bearing loans, $1.5 million of which was “payable to a company related to a shareholder”. Among the developments Sakto invested in was the construction of what the company described as a “Class A Office Tower”, completed on schedule and within budget in November 1989. Known as 333 Preston Street, this building houses the company’s current headquarters.

Sakto Financial Report 1993

Aquired in 2000 - Government Offices

During the 1990s, the company claims it ”continued shaping [its] property portfolio through acquisitions and disposals of various assets” and since 2000 it has been involved in some of Ottawa’s biggest property deals. These included the news making purchase of over a quarter of a million square feet of commercial space in the flourishing high-tech business district of Kanata and other buildings for over $31 million Canadian Dollars. Much of this property was later sold on to a ’nominee’ company, however Sakto continues to lease and manage the buildings, apparently on behalf of the new purchasers.

Getting Bigger – Commercial Plaza Expansion The company has recently completed the building of a second phase of its Preston Street Commerce Plaza complex, which includes a second 16 story tower block and a large commercial centre. The Sakto website boasts that the centre represents “the very definition of Class A business space”.

Uncle Onn Mahmud (Taib's brother) Directed the company with Jamilah until 2004

Sean Murray, the current Director of Sakto, is a Canadian of Irish Catholic extraction. Records show he became involved in Sakto’s affairs in 1987, having reportedly met Jamilah Taib at University. After marrying Jamilah, a process that involved his conversion to Islam, Sean Murray took over as a Director of a number of the Taib property interests, however there is no indication that he has become an actual shareholder. Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib ceased to be listed as a Director of Sakto some years ago, however Onn Mahmud, Taib’s brother only resigned as a Director in 2004.

Aged 23 Jamilah Taib became Director of Sakto Development Corporation (between studies) then President

Society Family

A number of Sean Murray’s family members are now employed at Sakto, which they describe as a family business. Some of Canada’s biggest commercial names rent space at their commercial and office properties, as well as numerous Canadian Government Ministries.

Major Shopping Mall – includes Chapters Bookstore

Now prominent members of Ottawa’s social elite, Sean Murray and Jamilah Taib are frequently photographed at society occasions and listed as donors to the city’s National Gallery of Canada. Functions at their lavish Rockcliffe mansion have included fundraisers for the top Canadian school, Ashbury College and for multiple Irish charities, including the Catholic St Patrick’s Home and the Ireland Fund of Canada.

The couple drew considerable attention when they recently moved into their new house, recorded as being the second most expensive private home in Ottawa and costing them over $9.6 million Canadian Dollars. Guests have been known to joke that it is so vast that different wings must have different post codes.

Sean and Jamilah - Ottawa's Golden Couple Political Connections

The couple, separately and through Sakto, have also been regular donors to the Ontario Liberal Party. This has included contributions totalling $6,000 to Premiere Dalton Mcguinty’s campaign budget in 2003. In 2007 it was announced that eleven Ontario Ministries were relocating into Sakto’s Preston Square building. ”Bringing together 11 ministries at Preston Square, in the heart of our community, will make our government more accessible to the people of Ottawa and more cost-effective”, explained Yasir Naqvi, MPP for Ottawa Centre. The offices were officially opened by Dalton Mcguinty himself in April 2008.

Pink Palace – Jamilah’s ‘tacky’ Ottawa Mansion From trees to tower blocks

Sarawak Report’s exclusive revelations are likely to draw fierce criticism from Canadian environmentalists and human rights campaigners, who have highlighted the devastation caused by unsustainable logging in Sarawak. Over US$25 billion worth of timber has been exported from the state as a result of the rampant, unsustainable logging promoted by Taib Mahmud and the former Chief Minister, who was his uncle. Less than 3% of the original rainforest remains and many of its indigenous peoples are now destitute as a direct result.

High-Tech - another Sakto acquisition

What is now clear is that Sakto’s position as one of Canada’s top development companies is closely linked to the Taib family’s questionable wealth and to tropical rainforest devastation. Canada’s booming property market of past years has exponentially increased the value of those investments, leaving the Taibs (but not the people of Sarawak) even more fabulously wealthy than before.

Shady truths in ‘fancy’ Sarawak

Kuching
Sunday, 20th June 2010

Members of the Sarawak government are always accusing people who criticise their policies of being enemies of ‘progress, development and modernisation’.
But these policies have reportedly stripped the country of its rainforests and taken away Native Customary Rights (NCR) lands from natives and turnd them into endless stretches of oil palm plantations.

Who is really profiting?

Chief Minister Taib Mamud has for years promised the people of Sarawak that in return for their land and destruction of the rainforest they would receive a future bathed in wealth and prosperity. He promised them a modern standard of living comparable to advanced countries.

But what is the evidence of this?

Not only the outsiders know that Iban have been marginalised but all the Iban leaders like Datuk Leonard Linggi, Alfred Jabu, James Masing, Celestine Ujang, William Mawan also know but why until now they, the dayak leaders could not defend their own people? What had Taib given to them until they look so stupid ?..Bukittunggal

Are these leaders being bought by Taib Mahmud ?

Sarawak which is the richest state in Malaysia has the poorest population. More than 60% of the population are said to be statistically living in poverty.

Over the years the poor have gotten poorer and hungrier without their lands to live off from.

In contrast the people around Taib and his friends have become richer, living a life in splendour that would have amazed Rajah Brooke himself.

Everything has been taken from the once fabulous interior of Sarawak and given to the rich businessmen from the coastal cities.

Deal that left Ibans in debt

In Batang Ai, the Iban community is struggling as in other parts of Sarawak. They were promised good compensation when they were forced from their homes to make way for the building of the dam.

But, like so many communities in Sarawak, they soon discovered their mistake. It turned out the government wanted to charge more for their new homes than the compensation for their old ones!

Now the Ibans are in debt to the government and have lost their valuable lands.

They were told that they would receive free water and electricity from the dam, but this promise has since been broken.

Most families have to use rainwater to cook and wash and to flush their toilets. At night the Ibans in this longhouse share electricity with their neighbours.

The roads to their longhouses have caved-in and the palm plantations around them have clogged up the river and are threatening dangerous mud-slides into their town.

Farmers have to walk many miles to reach their allocated fields and can no longer catch fish. There is no longer food from the forest.

The only ‘modern’ jobs on offer are the very lowly paid jobs on the oil plantations run by SALCRA, which is managed by Taib’s family and friends.

Ibans are paid RM8 a day – compare this with the RM165 million that Taib’s family allegedly made from the Bengoh Dam project in just a few weeks!

Millions promised but nothing came

Little needs to be said about the roads to Batang Ai. The only time the roads were surfaced was the day before Taib flew from Kuching in his helicopter for last year’s Batang Ai by election.

The government agency hastily repaired the one stretch between the heliport and the place he was due to speak. On that occasion Taib again promised the people at Batang Ai that if they voted for him he would pay millions of ringgit to improve their longhouses and their roads.

But that did not happen. Most roads are as terrible as before and longhouses have received no money.

Said a resident of a longhouse in Batang Ai, who’s great grandfather was a proud Iban warrior: “Thirty years after Taib came and promised us ‘modernisation’ with the coming of the dam and the planting of oil palm, we are poorer and our lives are harder.

“I go to Kuching and I see Taib’s fancy house and his parliament. I see the fancy hotels and buildings. Then I return and see us, our lives. I can see who has really profited from all this ‘progress and development’.”

Malaysia Is Getting Bankrupt Because Of Mahathir Mohamad

Kuching
Sunday, 20th June 2010

Yesterday I published an article about Marina Mahathir's condomonium in KK Sabah which valued at RM 100 million. Today I am going to publish what one of Bukittunggal reader had shared with me about Mahathir family members and cronies banking accounts with Israel National Bank in Singapore.

Malaysian Maverick....Tun Mahathir Mohamad

It is obvious to me that Dr Mahathir bears a heavy responsibility for the political and economic uncertainty that grips the country today...Barry Wain ( Starbizweek, Saturday 19th 2010)
These accounts were opened at an Israeli Singapore-based bank in the neighboring country of Singapore.

The bank is ISRAELI NATIONAL BANK.
That vast amount of monies could have been derived through the following:

i. Deposited by an agent of the Israeli Government or any other foreign government.

ii. Derived by the various companies of Mahathir's cronies.

iii. Perhaps this could be the RM1Bil missing from UMNO's account which Anwar Ibrahim brought up before he was dismissed from UMNO.

Details of accounts are as follow:

I hope that Idris Jala will look into these information thoroughly. Instead of  proposing to scrap the subsidies which will have an adverse affects to the poor, he should proposed to Najib to punish all of those  corrupted politicians.

Where did Marina Mahathir Get The Money to Build this RM100 Million Condo?

Kuching
Saturday, 19th une 2010

Malaysians Must Wake Up

More than RM 100 Million Condomonium Belong to Marina Mahathir..

Only Mahathir and family and cronies become wealthy; stealing from the Malaysian people.
Marina Apartment in Kota Kinabalu is owned by Marina Mahathir daughter of Malaysia ex PM.
This four 10 storey blocks faces the sea near the Philippine market, the dead centre of Kota Kinabalu.
Where did she get the 100 Million to build this complex apartment? The answer is Of course from the corrupt father Dr. Mahathir Mohd who has also another 1 Billion USD once stashed in Bank of Israel.

Look at the condition of one of the  longhouse located in N25-Balai Ringin under Snowdan Lawan, that had applied for housing loan since year 2007 to rebuilt their longhouse but recieve no respond from Barisan Nasional Sarawak's government.....
Condition of the longhouse located in N25-Balai Ringin which is under Snowdan Lawan (PRS-BN). Their housing loan application submitted in year 2007 had not been approved by BN Government..

Jabu the King of NCR Lands Robbery

Kuching
Friday, 11th June 2010

Jabu Is Indeed an NCR Land Robber Himself

I was stunned today upon reading in Brokenshield that Jabu himself actually is the robber of the NCR lands which are mostly belong to the Iban, the same people that voted for him.

According to the data in the Brokenshields, Jabu and his cronies so far have a total of 4372.925 ha of NCR lands approved for oil  palm plantation.

Please check on the companies below:-

(1) Durafarm Sdn Bhd, Suite 502, Tingkat 5, Crown Towers, Kuching has three areas: Lot 17 Block 5 Bijat Land District, Simanggang – 26.625 ha; Lot 21 Block 12 Bijat Land District – 1248 ha; Lot 9 Block 3 Skrang Land District – 307.2 ha.

Total approved 1581.825 ha for 60 years on 4 December 2000. Contact person is Robert Lawson Chuat, YB for Bukit Saban, a nephew of Jabu.

(2). Durafam at the same address has five areas: Lot 30 Block 12, Paku Land District, Betong – 110.6 ha; Lot 1 Block 15 Paku Land District, Betong – 936 ha; Lot 219 Block 7 Batu Api Land District, Betong – 969 ha; Lot 36 Block 12 Batu Api Land District, Betong – 437 ha; and Lot 38 Block 12 Batu Api Land District, Betong – 219.5 ha.

Total approved 2672.1 ha for 60 years on 1 March 2005. Contact person is Robert Lawson Chuat, YB for Bukit Saban.

(3). Ever Herald Sdn Bhd, Suite 6.12 (1st Floor) Kueh Hock Kui Commercial Centre, Jalan Tun Ahmad Zaidi Adruce, Kuching has three areas: Lot 8 Block 23 Sablor Land District, Btg. Layar/Btg. Lupar – 250 ha; Lot 1 Block 24 Sablor Land District, Btg. Layar/Btg. Lupar – 770 ha; and Lot 3 Block 25 Sablor Land District, Btg. Layar/Btg. Lupar – 1853 ha.

Total approved 2873 ha for 60 years on 9 August 2004. Contact person is Henry Jantum, a close associate of Jabu.

(4). Ever Herald Sdn Bhd has three areas: Lot 180 Block 1 Bijat Land District, Simanggang – 134 ha; Lot 4 Block 2 Bijat Land District – 1930 ha; and Lot 160 Block 3 Bijat Land – 63 ha.

Total approved 2127 ha on 2 July 2004. Contact person is Henry Jantum, a close associate of Jabu.

(5). Utahol Sdn Bhd, Crown Towers, 5th Floor 88 Jalan Pending, Kuching has three areas: Lot 3682 Panduran Land District, Ulu Medamit, Limbang – 3,610.00 ha; Lot 1 Long Napir Land District, Ulu Medamit, Limbang – 2090.00 ha; and Lot 5 Long Napir Land District, Ulu Medamit, Limbang – 1,200 ha.

Total approved 6900 ha on 23 May 2000. Contact person is Gerald Rentap anak Alfred Jabu.

For all this while, we have been blaming the White Haired Hajah alone for the NCR Lands problems faced by the Iban. But after looking at the data I am afraid this "scam" may involve the other Iban BN politicians like James Masing, William Mawan and etc....
To all the Ibans out there, wake-up now...the leaders that you have voted and entrusted to protect your most valuable assets are actually the persons that robbed your land from you. Remember to EXERCISE YOUR RIGHTS BY NOT VOTING FOR THEM IN THE COMING ELECTIONS......

1Malaysia-Leader First People Last

Kuching
Monday, 7th June 2010

1Malaysia Slogan, People First Performance Now should be changed to Leader First, People Last.
One of the reason why the slogan should be changed is because of the way how the leaders especially from UMNO spend the monies. Idris Jala revealed that within 9 years Malaysia will get bankrupt if the subsidy is not scrap. But by looking at the way how the government/UMNO spend the monies, subsidy is not the real reason for Malaysia bankrupcy. Just look at the house belong to the ex-prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi. The house which is still under construction is believing to cost around RM 12 Million, and it is located at Lot 65 Section 60, Kuala Lumpur.

Compare pak Lah's house with still serving Chief minister of Kelantan, Tuan Guru Nik Aziz below.

Tuan guru Nik Aziz's House

As a rakyat of this nation, we must know how to judge whether BN government 1Malaysia is real or just a rethoric or should we just change 1Malaysia's  Slogan to "Leader First, People Last". If one want to see how the people especially the Iban are being treated Last, please visit my previous article about one of the longhouse name Kampong Empling, which is currently under P202-Sri Aman (Masir Kujat) and N25-balai Ringin (Snowdan Lawan)  HERE.

No Goodies and Financial Assistance For the Needy Iban/Dayak From Barisan Nasional For Gawai Dayak

Kuching
Saturday, 5th June 2010

Happy Gawai . This year, just like the previous years, Barisan Nasional did not distributed goodies to the poor Iban/Dayak so as to help them to celebrate gawai dayak just like the rest of the middle income group Iban. This scenerio is totally different from the other main celebrations in Malaysia such as the Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali.

From my own observation, there are to two main differents between the Gawai Dayak Celebration compare to the Chinese New Year, Hari Raya Puasa and Deepavali  in term of government involvement, first the distribution of goodies or monies to the poor dayak/Iban. The government so far had never distributed any goodies, gifts or monies to the needy dayak/Iban. Secondly, two BN YBs had never paid any gawai visits to the longhouses in their constituencies. The voters in P202 and N25 must not vote for BN candidates in the coming state election. This area need change...therefore vote for PR. SUCH A DOUBLE STANDARD

Presentation of Assistance to the needy Chinese during CNY

Presentation of Assistance to the needy Indian during Deepavali

Presentation of Assistance to the needy Muslims/Malay during Hari Raya Puasa

Talking about the income among the races in Malaysia, Iban is the poorest group. But during Ari Gawai Dayak or the Chrismas Day, the two celebrations that are celebrated by the Dayak/Iban, the government had never distributed the goodies or gifts to the poor dayaks, i.e widowers, orphans, handicapped..etc.
On 31st May 2010, on my way back to my longhouse which is located not far from Sg. Tenggang, along the road  I could see few families happily doing their final preparations for gawai but some did not do anything as they were too poor to celebrate gawai.
But where were their YBS, YB Snowdan Lawan and Masir Kujat? These two BN YBs that these poor longhouse dwellers had been voted for,  had  never bother to chip in few ringgits to them so that they could celebrate Ari Gawai just like rest of the people in their longhouse.
Another point that I would like to raise today is the where about of these two BN YBs during the festival? Gawai dayak is the best venue for the YBs to minggle with the people and to know better the people that vote for them without any protocol.
For Peninsular Malaysia politicians this scenario may shock them but for the Sarawakian politician this is normal. Therefore today, I would like to urge all the Iban/Dayak out there to think carefully before choosing the politicians that will represent them in the coming State election.
Please remember this " We need Change, and change only can be made by throwing your vote to Pakatan Rakyat.

What is Gawai Dayak

Gawai Dayak which is celebrated in Sarawak on 1st and 2nd  June every year is both a religious and social occasion. It is celebrated to mark the end of the padi harvesting season and is essentially a thanksgiving occasion.
The Dayak, which includes the Iban, Bidayuh, Kayan, Kenyah, Kelabit, Murut and a few more, would visit their friends and relatives on this day. Such visit is more known as "ngabang" in Iban language.
Looking back at history how Gawai Dayak was celebrated. It was formally gazetted on 25th September 1964 as a public holiday in place of Sarawak Day, when Sarawak was still under the Chief Ministership of Datuk Stephen Kalong Ningkan. It was first celebrated on 1st June 1965 and became a symbol of unity, aspiration and hope for the Dayak community..

What is The Meaning Of Gawai Dayak for the Dayak Communities Nowaday

Nowadays, Gawai Dayak is celebrated with a slightly different mindset. Where most of the young dayaks are working in the cities therefore  Gawai Dayak is the best time where they can go back to their long houses and celebrate gawai with their family members.

But Where are Our Beloved Prime Minister and His Deputy

Is it true that  1Malaysia is just a rethoric as claims  by the Opposition ? Today is the third day of the Ari Gawai celebration, but Najib and Muhyiddin had not paid a  Gawai Visit to the Dayak community leaders. Where are they? Is this the real meaning of 1Malaysia ?  Or 1Malaysia is only applicable to Chinese, Indian or Malay in the  Peninsular Malaysia?
Based on newspapers report both Najib and Muhyiddin not only did not visit the dayak but also the Pesta Keamatan, which was celebrated by the Kedazan and Murut in Sabah on 30th and 31st May .
I dont think that we in Sabah and Sarawak, the Kadazan and Murut,  and the Dayaks still not  clever enough to judge Najib and Muhyiddin feeling toward us, and that they only need us during the election. If our Chinese friends in Sibu  can vote BN out, there is no reason for us not to follow their foot steps by voting BN out in the coming state election...
