15,000 copies of the Bible seized -Please Reinstated 20/18 Agreement & Islam is not Official Religion For Sabah Sarawak

KUALA LUMPUR - Malaysian authorities have seized some 15,000 bibles imported from Indonesia because they use the word "Allah" as a translation for God which is banned here, a church leader said Thursday.
"The church uses the bible and it is part of the worshipper's life. There is no reason why it should be confiscated," said Reverend Hermen Shastri (left), general secretary of the Council of Churches of Malaysia.

"The bibles are used in the church," he said, dismissing suggestions by Islamic officials that they could be used to help convert Muslims who make up some 60 percent of the 27 million population.
Shastri said the latest confiscation happened in September when airport authorities in Sarawak seized 10,000 copies of the Indonesian-language bibles which feature the disputed word "Allah".
Another 5,000 copies were confiscated in March, he said.
"The reason given for the detention of the Scriptures was because they contain banned words," he said.

Two-year legal battle


The Catholic Church has waged a two-year legal battle with Malaysian authorities over the use of the word "Allah" as a translation for "God" in its newspaper published here.
The Herald newspaper, circulated among the country's 850,000 Catholics, nearly lost its publishing licence last year for using the disputed word in its Malay-language edition.
The government has argued that the word "Allah" should be used only by Muslims, who dominate the population of multicultural Malaysia.
The row is one of a string of religious disputes that have erupted in recent years, straining relations between Muslim Malays and minority ethnic Chinese and Indians who fear the country is being "Islamised".
Shastri said there was no reason to seize the bibles because the use of the word "Allah" predates Islam.
"The word is not sensitive in Indonesia and the Christians use it in the Middle East. It is mainly driven by other motives ... (to project) the dominance of Islam in Malaysia," he said.
Officials at the Home Ministry, which Shastri said was involved in the seizure, were not immediately available for comment. - AFP

Religion is one of the important point being considered by our forefather from Sabah and Sarawak before they agreed to join Malaya and Singapore to form Malaysia. That why the first point of the agreement was about religion. According to the agreement :

Point 1: Religion

While there was no objection to Islam being the national religion of Malaysia there should be no State religion in North Borneo, and the provisions relating to Islam in the present Constitution of Malaya should not apply to North Borneo.

The agreement explicitly mentioned that there should be no state religion for North Borneo (to include Sarawak as stated in it 18 Agreement) I guessed. As for the bible confiscated in Kuching Airport, they  were brought-in and to be used in the churches throughout Sarawak. Ministry of Internal Affair should return the bible to the church to avoid any religious crisis in the state. In the past, without the interference from the peninsular, the Christianity majority and muslims followers in sarawak have been living together in harmony.

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 — Port Klang assemblyman Badrul Hisham Abdullah has quit PKR, citing a loss of faith in the party leadership and unhappiness over financial allocations, in a move that could spark a crisis in the Pakatan Rakyat (PR) state government.

Badrul Hisham said he would now be a Barisan Nasional (BN) friendly independent lawmaker.
He did not say if he would eventually be joining Umno or any other political party, but he asserted that he would not relinquish his state seat.
His announcement comes just hours after Selangor Mentri besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim had said he wanted the lawmaker to resign as assemblyman for non-performance.
Badrul Hisham won the Port Klang state seat in Election 2008 with 12,397 votes against Barisan Nasional’s Roselinda Abdul Jamil who got 7,990 votes and independent Nazir Mansor with 580.
Early this month, Khalid had said he would decide on Badrul Hisham’s status by the end of October.
Speculation had been rife for months now that Badrul Hisham planned to defect to Umno and controversy has plagued the first-term lawmaker since the general election last year due to complaints by voters in his constituency that he was never around and could not be contacted.
“I was elected by the people and not by the Mentri Besar of Selangor,” said Badrul in a three page statement in response to Khalid’s call for him to quit.
“I am no longer a PKR member but will remain an independent representative supporting Barisan Nasional,” he added.
Khalid had also alleged that Badrul Hisham has been incommunicado and did not respond to the show cause letter sent by the state government.
“For your information I have given my explanation through a letter dated Aug 28 2009,” said Badrul.
He claimed that he had been sidelined by the state government which made it difficult for him to perform his duties.
“The refusal of the PKR-led Selangor government to assist me in coordinating financial allocation for my constituency made me feel marginalised,” said Badrul Hisham.
Badrul Hisham also cited Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s actions in causing his sodomy trial to be postponed several times as another reason for his loss of confidence in PKR.
“I am having doubts on the leadership of Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for not having the courage to face trial for the Saiful Bukhari sodomy case,” said Badrul Hisham.
“He has been avoiding from giving explanation to party members,” he added.
“I take seriously the allegation of moral misconduct against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim,” he said.

PKR Sabah terus bergolak

PKR Sabah menghadapi satu lagi tamparan, dengan ketua bahagian Kota Kinabalu Christina Liew mengumumkan peletakan jawatan sebagai anggota majlis tertinggi parti hari ini, mengikut jejak naib presiden PKR Datuk Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

Liew, yang telah digantikan bagi jawatan timbalan pengerusi PKR Sabah, berkata bagaimanapun beliau kekal sebagai anggota parti dan mengekalkan jawatan ketua bahagian Kota Kinabalu.

"Saya akan menyerahkan surat peletakan jawatan saya kepada presiden parti hari ini," katanya kepada Bernama

Liew berkata selama ini beliau percaya yang parti itu adalah adil dan telus sehingga pelantikan Datuk Kong Hong Ming sebagai timbalan pengerusi PKR Sabah dan Ahmad Thamrin Jaini sebagai ketua parti yang baru di Sabah.

"Ibu saya terpaksa berdepan dengan pandangan serong orang ramai kerana saya telah digantikan (sebagai timbalan pengerusi) atas alasan yang tidak diketahui.

"Saya telah bekerja keras selama sembilan tahun untuk mempromosikan PKR Sabah. Oleh kerana parti tidak menghargai sumbangan saya, saya berundur dengan bermaruah sekarang," katanya.

Dr Jeffrey telah meletakkan jawatan sebagai naib presiden PKR, anggota majlis tertinggi dan anggota biro politik, memberikan tamparan hebat kepada cubaan PKR untuk memperkukuhkan parti itu di Sabah.

Dr Jeffrey, yang dijangka menghantar surat peletakan jawatan ke ibu pejabat parti menjelang hari ini, akan kekal sebagai anggota biasa parti, menurut bekas pembantu kanannya Kanul Gindol.

Dipercayai majoriti ketua bahagian termasuk Dr Jeffrey sendiri, kecewa dengan keputusan penasihat PKR Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim melantik Ahmad Thamrin sebagai ketua parti yang baru di Sabah.

Ahmad Thamrin, anak kelahiran Sabah dinamakan sebagai ketua PKR negeri yang baru pada hujung minggu lalu selepas ketua-ketua bahagian menyatakan tidak yakin dengan naib presiden PKR Azmin Ali untuk menerajui PKR negeri.

Di TAWAU, Kong berkata beliau terkejut dengan keputusan Dr Jeffrey untuk meletak jawatan sebagai naib presiden parti, menyatakan Dr Jeffrey telah bersetuju dengan keputusan berhubung pelantikan Ahmad Thamrin sebagai pengerusi perhubungan PKR Sabah yang baru.

"Saya menghormati keputusan (Dr) Jeffrey meletakan jawatannya sebagai naib presiden PKR, namun tidak bersetuju dengan andaian bahawa pelantikan pengerusi perhubungan PKR Sabah yang baru sebagai tidak mengikut kehendak ketua-ketua cabang (bahagian)," katanya.

Mesyuarat perhubungan PKR Sabah yang diadakan pada 22 Okt lalu di Kota Kinabalu, yang dihadiri semua pemimpin 25 cabang parti dan perhubungan negeri termasuk Dr Jeffrey, bersetuju supaya isu pelantikan pengerusi perhubungan PKR negeri diserah kepada presiden parti, katanya kepada pemberita selepas mengadakan pertemuan dengan anggota dan ketua cawangan PKR zon Tawau.

"Kita anggap isu pelantikan pengerusi perhubungan PKR negeri dalam mesyuarat malam itu sudah selesai. Jadi keputusan yang dibuat Dr Jeffrey ini memang di luar jangkaan saya.

"Sebagai pemimpin berpengalaman, kita harus hormat keputusan mesyuarat rasmi," katanya.

Kong bagaimanapun yakin keputusan Dr Jeffrey tidak akan menjejaskan kekuatan parti. BERNAMA

Land Seminar By Naroden Is a Planned Strategy to Rob Dayak Of their NCR Land

Tactical Planning By Naroden and Taib Cronies in Robbing the NCR Land

Yang Berhormat Naroden Majais, the Simunjan State assemblyman  has suggested that mini seminars or dialogues on land need to be organised in all constituencies in Sarawak. According to him the purpose of the seminar is so that people can have better understanding of the state land code and policies.

Naroden who is also known as the "Simunjan King of oil palm", who owing more than 48,000 acres of land including NCR land of oil palm in Simunjan area.In March 2009, DD Plantations and Pelita Holdings Sdn. Bhd. has signed the agreement  with 46 longhouse chiefs to develop their NCR land but failed to persuade six longhouses in the Kpg. Samalatong/Kepayang area  to join the JV as they prefered the JV with SALCRA.

Speaking at the Sarawak Land Seminar for southern zone in Kuching yesterday, 27 Oct 2009, Naroden claimed that many village headmen, longhouses chief and politicians lacked understanding of the land policies and NCR.

This is the strategy by Taib cronies and Malay/Melanau to rob Iban/dayak of their NCR lands. The JV so far has been very successfully  in disempower the natives by taking away their basic asset - land - in order to reduce them to a situation where they would be forever depending on them. One day , if effort is not made to stop Taib and his cornies from taking their NCR land, one day the Iban/dayak will lave as a landless ctizen on it own motherland.

Being the new generation of Iban/Dayak, I urge everyone to come forward to fight under PKR flagship. If we fail in PKR, let's fight in what we are known for...Let's Ngayau....!

Tindakan nekad seorang guru dan tiga pengawal keselamatan terjun mengharung air deras dalam kegelapan malam menyelamatkan 19 murid daripada hanyut dalam kejadian jambatan runtuh di kawasan perkhemahan Pusat Kokurikulum Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah (PPD) Kinta di Ipoh malam tadi.

Hanya cahaya samar lampu dari kawasan perkhemahan yang terletak di seberang tebing sungai berkenaan membantu usaha menyelamat itu.

Suasana ketika itu kelam-kabut dengan jeritan minta tolong dan tangisan murid yang berpaut pada tali jambatan, kata pengawal keselamatan SK Kuala Dipang, Zulkifli Mohamad, 38, kepada pemberita hari ini.

Dalam kejadian pada pukul 10.30 malam itu, 22 murid terjatuh ke dalam Sungai Kampar semasa sedang menaiki jambatan gantung yang baru dibina dua minggu lepas itu untuk jamuan malam di SK Kuala Dipang

Kumpulan itu adalah antara 298 murid dari 64 sekolah rendah dari Tronoh, Batu Gajah dan Kampar yang menyertai perkhemahan 1Malaysia di pusat berkenaan yang terletak di tebing berdepan sekolah berkenaan.

Menceritakan semula detik-detik cemas malam tadi, Zulkifli berkata kejadian itu berlaku secara tiba-tiba dan tanpa berfikir panjang beliau terus terjun ke sungai berkenaan untuk membantu mangsa.

Dua lagi rakannya Rosli Mohamad, 44, dan Ismail Ahmad 62, turut terjun ke sungai bagi menyelamatkan kanak-kanak terbabit.

Zulkifli berkata rakannya Rosli berjaya membawa naik enam murid manakala beliau dan Ismail sempat menarik naik antara empat dan enam murid.

"Air sungai sangat deras dan saya bersyukur kerana dapat membantu dengan cepat," katanya.

Sementara itu seorang guru Mohd Safri Abdul Rafar berkata beliau berada tidak jauh dari jambatan dan terkejut apabila terdengar bunyi benda jatuh diikuti oleh jerit pekik.

Menyedari jambatan itu runtuh ketika murid-murid berada di atasnya, beliau nekad terjun ke sungai dan mengharungi arus deras bagi menyelamatkan mereka.

Seorang pelajar yang terselamat dalam kejadian itu Mohd Haziq Teng Mohd Salleh, 12, dari Sekolah Jenis Kebangsaan (C) Bemban, Batu Gajah, berkata semasa kejadian, beliau berada di tengah-tengah jambatan.

"Tiba-tiba sahaja saya tercampak ke dalam sungai, air sangat deras... saya bersyukur kerana sempat berpaut pada tali yang terjuntai dari titi dan dapat menyelamatkan diri dengan menaiki tepi tebing," katanya.

Perkhemahan yang bermula semalam dijadual hingga Khamis dan pendaftaran peserta dibuat sejak 3 petang semalam.

Jambatan sepanjang kira-kira 50 meter itu baru siap dibina dua minggu lepas bagi menggantikan sebuah jambatan gantung lama yang runtuh sebelum ini dan ia menghubungkan tapak perkhemahan untuk ke SK Kuala Dipang.

Seramai 23 guru terlibat dengan perkhemahan itu dan kem yang diadakan di SK Kuala Dipang itu adalah yang kedua dianjurkan Pejabat Pelajaran Daerah (PPD) Kinta Selatan selepas perkhemahan di SK Pos Raya minggu lepas.

KUCHING – Veteran Iban leader Daniel Tajem is not even a PKR member but he has accepted an appointment to sit in the PKR national integration council to help improve East-West Malaysia ties.

A former president of the defunct PBDS, Tajem who is now partyless said “that makes me free to accept any appointment and attend any function organized by any party if I want to. I'm a free man”.

Contacted by the Malaysian Mirror today, Tajem said he has agreed to sit in the council, asking “why not, if my services are required to help improve ties between the East Malaysian states and the peninsula”.

He added that PKR’s objectives and his are similar in many ways.

Expose Taib's land-grabbing policy

“As long as Abdul Taib Mahmud’s (Sarawak chief minister) policy of extremism especially with regard to the grabbing of NCR land and selling them to cronies and plantation companies, I will find some ways to help expose such a policy.

“PKR is one of them, although I hope it could be the Malaysian Dayak Congress but sadly, MDC cannot be registered by the authorities following strong objections from state leaders”, he said.

This government’s policy is a process of disempowerment of the natives by taking away their basic asset - land - in order to reduce them to a situation where they would be forever depending on them, he said.

The appointment of Tajem, 74, to the PKR national integration council was revealed by a news online portal as one of six personalities appointed to the council whose aim is to help improve ties between the peninsula and the East Malaysian states.

Sabahan’s Dr Jeffrey Kitingan has been named the coordinator. The other members are PKR deputy president Dr Syed Husin Ali and former Gerakan stalwart Dr Toh Kin Woon, both representing the peninsula, Tajem and former state minister Hafsah Harun from Sarawak and another Sabahan.

Tajem has described his appointment as very challenging, adding that he would give his best input to the council.

Lately, Tajem has been very busy on the political front; having lunch with PKR president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and having tea on the same day with a PKR leader, Zaid Ibrahim. Later he addressed a gathering organised by PKR.

All these activities have prompted his supporters especially those who have remained partyless following the de-registration of PBDS in October 2004 that Tajem might return to the political scene.

Colourful political career

The veteran Iban leader has a colourful political career having served 23 years as state assemblyman and nine years as MP. He had also served as Sarawak deputy chief minister but chose to take part in the infamous Ming Court revolt against Taib in 1987. When the coup failed, Tajem retreated into the political wilderness. But CM Taib has been 'sored' with him ever since..

In 1996 he was appointed as High Commissioner to New Zealand and returned to Kuching in 2000 to defend his deputy president’s post in the PBDS party election.

In 2003, he was challenged by Dr James Masing for the top post of the party. Masing’s challenge caused a leadership crisis in the party that led to PBDS’ deregistration in October 2004.

Masing went on to form Parti Rakyat Sarawak that same year but Tajem has been partyless ever since.

PKR Sarawak berdepan dengan masalah pemilihan calon

Ranjau yang lebih mencabar menanti saudara Baru Bian di hadapan. Satu pukulan kepada kaum Iban yang buat masa sekarang tidak mempunyai  pemimpin yang karismatik di dalam PKR.

Tahniah diucapkan kepada saudara Baru Bian di atas perlantikan beliau sebagai Ketua Perhubungan PKR Sarawak. Di dalam penyataan akhbar kepimpinan PKR pusat pada Ahad, 25 Okt 2009 telah menamakan bahawa Baru Bian adalah Ketua Perhubungan PKR Sarawak yang baru menggantikan Mustaffa Kamil Ayub.

Perlantikan beliau telah menamatkan spekulasi tentang keyakinan PKR pusat terhadap kepimpinan PKR negeri. Baru Bian merupakan seorang peguam yang terkenal di Sarawak terutamanya di dalam kes-kes yang melibatkan tanah adat. Beliau merupakan bekas penyokong PBDS serta terlibat di dalam penubuhan Malaysian Dayak Congress (MDC) tetapi tidak diluluskan oleh ROS atas sebab keselamatan.

Diharap perlantikan DDT (Lagenda kepimpinan Iban) dapat membantu Baru Bian meraih sokongan kaum Iban!

Dengan masalah perlantikan Ketua Perhubungan negeri telah dapat diselesaikan, saudara Baru Bian seharusnya tidak berdiam diri, ini kerana di hadapannya masih banyak perkara yang harus diselesaikan. Salah satu daripadanya adalah bagaimana beliau dapat mendapat sokongan akar umbi yang majoritinya adalah terdiri daripada kaum Iban. Tetapi saya berpendapat bahawa PKR pusat telah dapat menghidu perkara ini dengan perlantikan Datuk Daniel Tajem (DDT) sebagai penasihat. DDT yang merupakan lagenda pemimpin Iban alaf moden ini merupakan seorang pemimpin kaum Iban yang sangat dihormati. Adalah diharapkan dengan perlantikannya, sokongan kaum Iban terhadap PKR dapat dipertingkatkan.

Perkara pertama telah selesai, tetapi PKR bakal berdepan dengan perkara yang lebih berat, iaitu pemilihan calon yang akan bertanding. PKR seharusnya tidak mengambil ringan perkara ini. Kebanyakan ahli yang menyertainya adalah terdiri daripada mereka yang tidak mendapat tempat untuk menjadi calon di dalam BN (bukan atas sebab tidak layak tetapi oleh kerana semangat kroni di dalam BN yang cenderung memilih ahli keluarga masing-masing seperti yang diamalkan oleh Taib Mahmud dan Alfred Jabu untuk bertanding).

Dalam tulisan saya pada kali ini saya ingin menyentuh apa yang berlaku di kawasan N25 Balai Ringin. Semasa artikel ini ditulis saya dimaklumkan bahawa di N25, seramai tiga orang yang telah mengewarkan untuk menjadi calon. Iaitu Ibi Uding (Ketua Wanita PKR Negeri), Cubbold John Lusoi dan seorang pesara guru. Daripada ketiga-tiga pemimpin ini, Cubbold merupakan calon yang paling sesuai .

Tidak mempunyai aura sebagai pemimpin untuk N25

Ibi Uding mungkin nampak popular di peringkat negeri tetapi kepada akar umbi terutamanya reputasinya tidak memberangsangkan di N25. Reputasinya telah tercemar pada PRU 12 yang lalu, di mana beliau telah menghilangkan diri di saat-saat akhir pilihanraya. Di samping itu Ibi juga tidak melibatkan diri secara aktif dengan aktiviti di N25 Balai Ringin. Dan perkara yang lebih utama, beliau bukan anak watan N25.

Pengelibatannya  secara langsung di dalam sengketa tanah adat di Jalan Ubah menggugat reputasinya sebagai calon!

Manakala pemimpin berikutnya iaitu saudara Cubbold John, merupakan seorang aktivis yang cukup dikenali di N25. Pada awalnya sangat di sukai di N25 tetapi reputasinya tercemar oleh kerana pengelibatannya di dalam sengketa dengan pemilik tanah adat di Jalan Ubah/Tekuyong/Isu/Sapak/Keranggas. Beliau melakukan kesilapan kerana menyokong bekas TR Masa Tekuyong di dalam sengketa tersebut. Sebagai seorang politik beliau seharusnya mengambil sikap yang neutral dan tidak terlibat secara langsung dengan sengketa tersebut.

Manakala seorang lagi pemimpin, iaitu bekas guru, saya berpendapat masa beliau telah berlalu untuk menjadi calon. Pada peringkat umurnya, beliau hanya layak untuk menajadi ketua cabang sahaja.

Saya berharap kepimpinan PKR negeri yang diketuai oleh Saudara Baru Bian mengamalkan sikap berhati-hati apabila memilih calon. Pelajari daripada kesilapan di Perak, Kedah dan Pulau Pinang. Elakkan memilih calon sekadar melepaskan batuk ditangga semata-mata.

PKR Sarawak seharusnya berhati-hati memilih calon untuk mengelakkan perkara yang sama di Perak berlaku di sini. Elakkan pemimpin yang bacu!

Ramai penganalisis berpendapat bahawa pembentangan Bajet 2010 sebagai persediaan BN untuk menghadapi PU 13. Untuk berjaya merampas Sarawak daripada BN, semua pihak terutamanya saudara Baru Bian seharusnya merombak strategi ini termasuklah pemilihan calon-calon yang akan bertanding.

To Ibi....Please change your mindset, in and out!..As we want Change and Change We must!

The main reason why we chosed PKR rather than BN was because we want change. The defination of change is broaden. It does not mean changing the government alone but it also means changing the way how the party should operated. In BN , the minority must respect the majority even to the extend of sacrificing the basic need of such community, and the subordinate must follow whatever being said by the superior..to the extend neglecting the development of such community. In PKR, we should operate in a different way...We fight for everyone regardless of their races or religions. In order to fulfill this, everyone must be ready for any criticism.

Ibi Uding should take the comment positively. This is PKR.....We Want Change and Change we Must!

I am writing this letter in response to an alleged complaint by Puan Ibi Uding that I have been publishing content detrimental to PKR at www.linasoo.com which I am told, she claims is owned by me.

I wish to clarify that I am NOT the legal owner of www.linasoo.com. Even though the website carries the same name as mine, I wish to reiterate that I have nothing whatsoever to do with it. In Malaysia, we are protected by Section 211 of the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 which states that no content service provider, or other person using a content application service shall provide content which is indecent, obscene, false, menacing or offensive in character with intent to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any person. The offender is liable to a fine not exceeding RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both, and a further fine of RM1,000 for each day during which the offence is continued after conviction.

The ownership of a website can be verified by visiting www.whois.net which records the name of the registrant, address and contact details of the owner. Only the owner of the website has access to, and control over the domain name with a unique password known only to the registrant owner. (Hence, I have no control over someone else' property in cyberspace).

No blogger or PKR party member, in his or her right mind would publish anything offensive to PKR, party members and leaders using his or her own real name. This could be, the work of mischievous blogger(s) to create hostility and enmity amongst PKR party members, and we should be intelligent enough not to fall for it so easily. Having said that, suffice to say that me and my friends do not care to visit www.linasoo.com to know what is posted up there.

Frame-ups, trumped-up charges and miscarriage of justice have been the mainstay for the cause of our party struggle. Even top party leaders have not been spared.

I would advise Puan Ibi Uding to take the following steps:

1. Check the registration data on www.whois.net which gives the name

of owner, address and telephone contact

2. Make a police report of her grievances against the perpetrator

3. Lodge a complaint to the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission for investigation.

In fact I insist, Puan Ibi as responsible party leader, undertake the correct procedure to find out the truth.

Kit Siang says Pakatan Rakyat losing public confidence

KUALA LUMPUR - Veteran lawmaker Lim KIt Siang warned Sunday the opposition alliance was suffering from a "bout of loss of public confidence" after it enjoyed unprecedented success in national polls last year.

The Pakatan Rakyat alliance seized control of a third of seats in parliament in the 2008 elections, dealing the ruling Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition its worst results in the half-century it has governed Malaysia.

However, the three parties in the unlikely opposition alliance - the conservative Islamic party PAS, the liberal Democratic Action Party (DAP) and multi-racial Keadilan - have each been hit by infighting since.

Lim Kit Siang, the DAP supremo, urged the alliance to "impose discipline among their leaders" to protect the opposition's image, especially after its defeat in a by-election earlier this month.

"Pakatan Rakyat had been suffering a prolonged and unceasing bout of loss of public confidence... to convince the Malaysian electorate in its credibility, cohesion, integrity and common sense of purpose," he said in a statement.

Lim cited BN's recent Bagan Pinang by-election victory as an example, saying the opposition "cannot take the setback lightly and must not be in denial about its weaknesses and faults".

Trouble brewing in PAS, PKR

BN had lost seven out of eight special votes held since 2008 polls but it ended the opposition winning streak with a thumping victory in the latest vote, although it was criticised for fielding a popular but graft-tainted candidate.

The main Islamic party PAS is dogged by infighting after its spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat called for a special party vote to remove several top party leaders he described as "problematic".

Nik Abdul Aziz, a highly respected figure in PAS, made the proposal over his unhappiness that some of the party leaders were keen on pursuing a pact with Umno, the largest party in ruling BN.

The Keadilan party was also divided after Zaid Ibrahim, a former cabinet minister who quit last September and later joined Keadilan, recently announced his plan to go on a six-month leave from the party.

Zaid reportedly said he did not want to be "distracted by any internal party politics", fuelling speculation on the growing discord within Keadilan, led by former deputy prime minister Anwar Ibrahim. - AFP

Iban detained over anti-logging blockade in Kapit

KAPIT - Malaysian police said Saturday they had arrested a native leader who set up roadblocks in Borneo to stop a logging firm from encroaching on their ancestral land.

Ondie Jugah, 55, from the Iban indigenous group, was among a group of 10 people who have mounted a blockade since early this week in the interior of eastern Sarawak state, on Borneo island.
Police said Ondie was detained late Friday after he refused to remove the blockade, following complaints filed by the logging company.
"We directed him to open up the road but he refused, so we have to take him back to facilitate investigation," a senior police official from the local Kapit district, who did not want to be named, told AFP.
Police said Ondie was expected to be released later Saturday after questioning.
Ondie's son, Anthony, urged the police to release his father, saying they were merely protecting their home.
"They (the logging company) want to destroy our land and did not want to compensate us," the 29-year-old told AFP.

A form of 'harassment'

Nicholas Mujah, secretary general of indigenous rights group Sarawak Dayak Iban Association, condemned the arrest as a form of "harassment" of the vulnerable group and demanded the authorities respect native land rights.
The native Iban people are the largest indigenous group in Sarawak, making up almost half of the state's two million population. Other indigenous groups include Kenyah, Kayan and about 10,000 Penan people.
The Penan, some of whom are nomadic hunter-gatherers, have complained that their way of life is under threat from extensive logging of their traditional hunting grounds, as well as the spread of palm oil and timber plantations. - AFP
